Green Gram / Cherupayar Curry


GREEN GRAM / CHERUPAYAR CURRY




Cherupayar curry is an age old traditional curry that pairs perfectly with almost all Kerala breakfast dishes. This lip smacking curry is very easy to make.

Ingredients:

1. Green gram- 1 1/4 cup
2. Onion- 1
3. Curry leaves- 1 spring
4. Grated coconut- 1 cup
5. Garlic- 2
6. Shallots- 4
7. Salt- as needed
8. Green chilli- 3
9. Cumin seeds- 1/2 tsp
10. Coconut oil- 1 tbsp

Soak green gram for 7 hours. Transfer it into a pressure cooker and add onion, curry leaves and salt. Pour enough water and cook till done. 

Grind coconut, garlic, shallots, green chilli and cumin into a fine paste adding little water.

Open cooker and add the ground coconut paste. Place it back on stove and boil for 3 minutes on medium flame. Add more water only if required. Switch off the flame and mix coconut oil. 

Serve hot with puttu, appam etc.
