Palai Beef Curry

PALAI BEEF CURRY

A traditional beef curry recipe taught by my grandmother. She is from a place called Palai, Kottayam district in Kerala. It is spicy, fragrant and delicious. My childhood memories always have this curry served with hot steaming appam for breakfast.

Ingredients:

1. Beef cubes- 1 kg
2. Chilli powder- 1 1/2 tbsp
3. Coriander powder- 2 tbsp
4. Turmeric powder- 1 tsp
5. Onion- 3
6. Curry leaves- 1 spring
7. Coconut oil- 1 tbsp
8. Ginger- 1 inch piece
9. Garlic- 4
10. Pepper powder- 1 tsp
11. Garam masala- 1 tsp
12. Coconut milk- 2 cup

Dry roast chilli powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder. Be careful not to burn it. Add it to the beef cubes and mix well.

In a pressure cooker, add beef, 1 sliced onion, curry leaves and salt. Cook until done.

Heat oil in a pan. Add 2 sliced onion, ginger and garlic. Saute till it turns light golden. Add the cooked beef along with the stock, pepper powder and garam masala. Bring it to a boil. Cook till it becomes almost dry. Pour coconut milk and heat it. Switch off the flame when it slightly starts boiling.

Serve hot with rice, appam, flat breads etc.
