Mangalore Fish Curry
MANGALORE FISH CURRY
Tangy and flavorful fish curry from Mangalore and its locally called Meen Gassi. It goes amazingly well with rice.
Ingredients:
1. Fish- 1/2 kg
2. Tamarind- 2 tsp
3. Chilli powder- 3 tsp
4. Coriander powder- 1 1/2 tsp
5. Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
6. Fenugreek powder- 1/2 tsp
7. Cumin powder- 1/2 tsp
8. Ginger paste- 1 tsp
9. Salt- as needed
10. Coconut oil- 1 tbsp
11. Sliced shallots- 8
12. Garlic- 5
13. Curry leaves- 1 spring
14. Coconut milk- 1 cup
Soak tamarind in 1/2 cup of water for 15 minutes. Squeeze out its juice and add chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, fenugreek powder, cumin powder and ginger paste to it. Mix well to form a thick paste and keep it aside.
Heat coconut oil. Add shallots, garlic and curry leaves. Saute till wilted. Reduce the flame into low and add the masala paste. Saute well till its raw smell disappears. Add fish and saute for 3 minutes without breaking it. Pour coconut milk and mix well. Bring it to a boil and cook fish well. Gravy has a thick, creamy consistency.
Serve hot.
