Black Chickpeas Curry / Kadala Curry


BLACK CHICKPEAS CURRY / KADALA CURRY





This is a very easy and tasty recipe for Kerala style kadala curry which can be served as a side dish for puttu, appam etc.  

1. Black chickpeas- 1 cup
2. Salt- as needed
3. Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
4. Tomato- 1
5. Onion- 2
6. Green chilli- 2
7. Curry leaves- 1 spring
8. Grated coconut- 1 cup
9. Chilli powder- 1 tsp
10. Coriander powder- 1 tbsp
11. Garam masala- 1 tsp
12. Coconut oil- 1 tbsp
13. Shallots- 4
14. Mustard- 1 tsp
15. Red chilli- 2

Soak chickpeas overnight.

In a pressure cooker, mix chickpeas, onion, tomato, green chilli, turmeric powder, curry leaves and salt. Pour enough water to cook the chickpeas and cook for 3 to 4 whistles. Let the pressure go by itself.

Grind coconut, chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala to a fine paste adding little water.

Open the cooker and mix the ground coconut paste. Put it back on stove and bring it to boil. Boil for 1 minute and turn off the gas.

Heat oil. Splutter mustard. Add shallots and red chilli. Saute till sliced shallots turn golden. Turn off the flame and pour it over the prepared chickpeas curry. Mix well.

Serve hot with puttu, appam, roti etc.
