Special Kadala Curry / Black Chickpeas Curry


SPECIAL KADALA CURRY / BLACK CHICKPEAS CURRY




Spicy and tasty Black Chickpeas curry from the Kerala cuisine. This is a perfect side for almost all Kerala breakfast items. It has a thick gravy and its quite easy to make.

Ingredients:

1. Black Chickpeas- 1 cup
2. Water- as required
3. Coconut oil- 1 tbsp
4. Onion- 1
5. Shallots- 5
6. Chilli powder- 1 tsp
7. Coriander powder- 1 tsp
8. Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
9. Garam masala- 1 tsp
10. Coconut milk- 1 cup
11. Mustard- 1/2 tsp
12. Curry leaves- 1 spring
13. Fenugreek- 1/4 tsp
14. Red Chilli- 3
15. Salt- as required

Soak Chickpeas in water for 6 to 7 hours or overnight. Cook it in a pressure cooker. Take 1/2 cup of the cooked Chickpeas and grind it into a paste adding the stock from the cooker. 

Heat 1/2 tbsp oil. Saute Onion, Shallots and Curry leaves till wilted. Add Chilli powder, Turmeric powder, Coriander powder and Garam masala. Saute for 1 minute. Mix the ground Chickpea paste. Once its starts boiling, add the rest of the cooked Chickpeas and Coconut milk. Adjust salt. Let it boil and becomes thick.

Heat 1/2 tbsp oil. Splutter Mustard and Fenugreek. Roast Red Chillies. Pout this over the prepared curry and mix well.

Serve warm with Appam, Roti, Putt etc.
