Vanpayar Ularthiyath

VANPAYAR ULARTHIYATH

Vanpayar Ularthiyath is a very common curry in our house served as a side with Rice. It is very nutritious with its high protein content. This dish has a place in our Kerala sadhya also.

My Grand-mom says she can drink a big bowl of Rice gruel with this delicious side. This recipe is from my Mom's kitchen. I find it very tasty and every time I go home this is one thing I ask her to make for me. It has that strong aroma of roasted Shallots and GarIic. I have always noticed guests complimenting my Mom for this delicacy.

Ingredients:

1. Vanpayar / Brown Peas- 1 cup
2. Coconut oil- 1 tbsp
3. Mustard- 1/2 tsp
4. Shallots- 7
5. Garlic- 3
6. Red Chilli- 3
7. Curry leaves- 1 spring
8. Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
9. Pepper powder- 1/2 tsp
10. Salt- as required

Wash and soak Vanpayar for 5-6 hours. Drain and cook in a pressure cooker adding enough water and salt for 4-5 whistles. Once cooked drain and keep aside.

Crush gently Shallots and Garlic.

Heat Coconut oil in a pan. Splutter Mustard. Add Red Chilli, Curry leaves, crushed Shallots and Garlic and saute till its raw smell disappears.  Add cooked Vanpayar, Turmeric powder, Pepper powder and salt. Mix well. Cook for 3-4 minutes.

Serve with Rice, Rice Gruel etc. Enjoy!!!
