Steamed Parippu Vada/Steamed Dal Vada

STEAMED PARIPPU VADA / STEAMED DAL VADA

Malayalis love Parippu vada and black tea. In fact there are numerous songs describing this love between Keralite and Parippu vadas.

This recipe is a more healthier version of our fried Parippu vadas. Here I have steamed them instead of deep frying. Surprisingly it tastes yummier like our fried ones.

Ingredients:

1. Chana dal (Split Chickpeas)- 1 1/2 cup
2. Red Chilli- 5
3. Onion- 1/4 cup
4. Ginger- 1 tsp
5. Curry leaves- 2 springs
6. Peppercorns- 1/4 tsp
7. Cooking soda- pinch
8. Ghee- 1 tsp + 1 tbsp
9. Lime juice- 3 tsp
10. Mustard- 2 tsp
11. Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
12. Asafoetida- pinch
13. Grated Coconut- 3 tbsp
14. Sugar- 1/4 tsp
15. Coriander leaves- 1 tbsp
16. Salt- as required

Wash and soak Chana dal for 3-4 hours. Drain.

In a blender, grind soaked Chana dal, 3 Red Chillies, Onion, Ginger, 1 spring of curry leaves, Peppercorns and salt to a paste. Move it to a bowl after grinding and mix 1 tsp of Ghee and 2 tsp of Lime juice.Make small dumplings or balls and cook them in a steamer for 10 minutes.

Heat 1 tbsp ghee in a pan. Splutter Mustard. Add Asafoetida to the hot Ghee. Roast 2 Red chillies and 1 spring curry leaves. To this add Coconut, Turmeric powder, Sugar, 1 tsp Lime juice and saute for 2 minutes. Mix Coriander leaves. Lastly add steamed Parippu vadas and toss well.

Delicious steamed Parippu vadas are ready and can be served with any Chutney of your choice.

Enjoy with your black tea!!!
