Dates Pickle


DATES PICKLE



Dates pickle is a specialty of Malabar and it pairs best with Thalassery Biriyani. Moreover, it is very simple to make.

Ingredients:

1. Dates, pitted and chopped- 15
2. Coconut oil- 2 tbsp
3. Mustard- 1 tsp
4. Curry leaves- 1 spring
5. Chopped Green Chilli- 2
6. Garlic- 10
7. Chopped Ginger- 1 1/2 inch
8. Chilli powder- 1 1/2 tsp
9. Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
10. Fenugreek powder- 1/4 tsp
11. Salt- as required
12. Vinegar- 1/3 cup
13. Water- as required
14. Tamarind paste- 2 tsp

Wash dates. Squeeze and remove water completely. 

Heat 1 tbsp Coconut oil. Splutter Mustard. Roast Curry leaves and Green Chilli. Add Ginger and Garlic. Slightly saute it. Add Dates, Chilli powder, Turmeric powder and Fenugreek powder. Mix and saute well. Mix Tamarind paste. Adjust salt. Add Vinegar and combine well. Switch off gas. Lastly, add 1 tbsp of Coconut oil and stir well. 

Transfer into a glass jar when its cold and serve with Biriyani, Rice etc.

Notes:

Tamarind paste can be substituted with normal Tamarind. Soak 1 tbsp of Tamarind in 1/4 cup water.
