Chettinad Vazhakkai (Plantain) Kurma


CHETTINAD VAZHAKKAI (PLANTAIN) KURMA




The word Chettinad itself is aromatic. This Vazhakkai Kurma is a flavorful curry and it taste heaven when served with hot rice. 

Ingredients:

1. Plantain- 1 (Big)
2. Grated Coconut- 1/2 cup
3. Urad dal- 2 tsp
4. Coriander seeds- 2 tbsp
5. Red Chilli- 10
6. Fennel seeds- 1 tsp
7. Oil- 1 tbsp
8. Mustard- 1/2 tsp
9. Cumin- 1/2 tsp
10. Asafoetida- pinch
11. Chopped Onion- 2
12. Chopped Garlic- 1 tbsp
13. Salt- as required
14. Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp

Peel Plantain and dice into small cubes.

Grind Coconut into a paste by adding little water.

Roast Urad dal, Coriander seeds, Red Chilli and Fennel seeds. Grind them into a fine powder.

Heat oil. Splutter Mustard. Roast Cumin and Asafoetida. Add Onion and garlic. Saute till it turns translucent. Add Plantain and Turmeric powder. Cook closed in low flame for 5 minutes stirring occasionally. Mix ground spices, salt and some water. Cook the plantain well. Pour the ground Coconut paste and stir well. Let the curry boil and thicken a bit. Switch off the flame when the curry reaches the semi thick consistency.

Serve hot with Rice.
